pia for torrenting is it safe for torrents in

PIA is often recommended to be a good torrenting VPN. But how reliable is PIA? In this detailed guide, we’ll examine the performance of this provider. A few FAQs will be answered at the end.

Private Internet Access supports P2P traffic on all of their servers (over 29,000). Although seeding is possible, their support representatives stated that it won’t work unless you enable port forwarding (PIA supports this on all servers except those in the US).

Is PIA good for torrenting?

Yes, torrenting with PIA is worth it.

  • Excellent P2P support – PIA is the only VPN that supports P2P traffic from all servers.
  • Kill switch This feature prevents data leakage if the VPN connection drops unexpectedly. The kill switch can be set to activate if your connection drops randomly or if you aren’t connected to a server. You can only go online when connected to the VPN.
  • High download speeds –PIA is able to download at decent speeds, mainly due to its WireGuard integration. Although it isn’t the fastest torrenting VPN available, it’s still a good choice.
  • SOCKS5 Proxy – You can use a SOCKS5proxy to speed up your download speeds. It can also be used to route your VPN connection.
  • Port forwarding.Port forwarding can be integrated into the app. Activate it and PIA will tell you which port you should use to connect to its server.
  • Strong security –PIA provides protection for your data using 128-bit and 256-bit AES encryption, and the ChaCha20 cryptography. They only use RAM memory, so any restart will wipe all data.
  • This VPN does not monitor your activities while you are connected to it. PIA has court documents that prove they don’t keep any user data. All their apps are open-sourced, which means anyone can inspect the code.
  • You are protected from IPv6 and DNS leaks. Apps automatically block WebRTC traffic and IPv6 traffic, and route traffic through PIA’s DNS servers.
  • Split tunnelling – Choose which traffic is routed through the VPN server and which goes through your ISP network. You can improve your VPN speed by routing torrent client traffic only through PIA’s network.
  • Ad blockerPIA MACE can remove some ads (but not those in torrent clients) and prevent connections to malware-infected torrent websites.
  • Compatible with all torrent clients – You don’t have to install any additional software, since PIA works with most torrent clients (Vuze. uTorrent. qBittorrent. Deluge. You can find it here.
  • Port forwarding can be set up on certain servers
  • Supports torrenting and P2P traffic
  • No Request or Traffic logs
  • You can use it with up to 10 devices simultaneously
  • Unlimited Bandwidth at good speeds
  • 3200+ Servers in 29 countries
  • 30-day money-back guarantee

Speed Tests for Torrenting

We tested PIA using uTorrent, qBittorrent, a 20.00 GB file, WireGuard protocol and four servers (Canada Japan Spain and Romania). Our tester is from Romania. His download speeds and ETAs were originally 28-29 MiB/s with a 15-20 minute ETA (qBittorrent), and 15 MB/s with a 20-minute ETA (20Torrent).

  • Canada – 3-4 MiB/s with a 15-20 minute ETA, (qBittorrent), 2 MB/s with a 2 hours and 30 minutes ETA, (uTorrent), and 3-4 MiB/s
  • Japan – 490-550 KiB/s with an 11-12 hour ETA, (qBittorrent), 1 MB/s with a 7-8 hours ETA (uTorrent), and 1MB/s with an 11-12 hour time ETA (qBittorrent).
  • Spain – 2 MiB/s with a 2-3 hour ETA, (qBittorrent), or 3-4 MB/s with a 2-hour (uTorrent).
  • Romania – 3-4 MiB/s with a 1-hour ETA(qBittorrent), 2-3 MB/s, and a 2-hour ETA/ (uTorrent).

We also tested OpenVPN using the Romanian server. It was faster than qBittorrent, with speeds of 8-9 MiB/s. There was also a 30-minute delay. However, uTorrent speeds were slow at 350 kB/s with an 18-hour ETA.

We also tested the SOCKS5 proxy speed. They were faster than we expected, since there is no encryption. However, they were comparable to the Spanish server speeds: 2 MiB/s with a 2-hour ETA for qBittorrent and 3 MB/s with a 2-hour time ETA for uTorrent. The SOCKS5 proxy was also problematic. Our torrents stopped multiple times. Support reps at PIA said that this can sometimes happen. It is easy to fix this by simply changing the ports and reconnecting to the proxy.

Private Internet Access torrenting speeds may not be the fastest on the market but they can get the job done if the user is patient. You can experiment with different torrent clients and servers to find the fastest.

Tip:Download torrents with a lot seeders. No matter how fast your VPN is, if there are more leechers than you can download, your download speeds will be slower.

What is PIA for Torrenting? Reddit: Let’s check it!

Reddit is a great place to get (some) impartial opinions on VPNs. To find out what other people think about PIA, we checked r/VPNTorrents as well as subreddits.

Redditors generally like PIA for torrenting VPN. It’s simple to use, has high speeds (sometimes) and offers great security.

Some Redditors aren’t happy that Kape Technologies, the company that owns CyberGhost VPN or Zenmate VPN, bought PIA’s parent. However, this doesn’t mean that PIA is less secure. They operate independently and remain a 100% no-logs VPN.

Are there any drawbacks to torrenting with PIA

Private Internet Access’ slow torrenting is the problem, at least when compared to other VPNs. Although the download speeds aren’t too bad, they are slower than other VPNs. Our tests show that NordVPN is faster than PIA.

Reddit users also complain about receiving DMCA notices. Redditors who complained about this eventually acknowledged that they had not enabled the kill switch or DNS protection (route traffic through PIA DNS server).

They also used Deluge’s SOCKS5 proxy. If you use proxy settings, Deluge may leak IPs that are not being proxied. We don’t know if this is still happening at the moment. The SOCKS5 proxy does not have a kill switch so it is more likely to leak data (unless the torrent client is bind to the VPN).

They likely experienced DNS, traffic, and/or IPv6 leaks. It’s no surprise that they received DMCA notices.

How to Use the PIA for Torrenting

  1. Register for PIA.
  2. Install the app from your provider.
  3. Start the app and connect with a server (try the nearest one).
  4. You can download whatever you like to your torrent client.

FAQ

These are the top questions regarding Private Internet Access and torrenting.

Which PIA Server is Best for Torrenting?

We asked PIA support to advise us that you use the closest server. Because your device will be exchanging data faster with the VPN server, the closer the VPN server is to you the faster you can download.

You Can Use PIA’s SockS5 Proxy and VPN simultaneously?

Yes. To do this, go to the Proxy section within the app and enable SOCKS5 proxy. Go to Connection to switch from WireGuard or OpenVPN if it is greyed out. This connection method works only over OpenVPN. For the server’s IP, you’ll have to use the ping command with nl-proxy.privateinternetaccess.com to find it. To generate your username or password, set the port to 1080.

The SOCKS5 + VPN connection method provides more privacy as your IP is hidden behind 2 PIA IP addresses. You can also use a proxy to get encryption. But, it may slow down your download speeds.

Speed up Private Internet Access’ slow Torrenting with

PIA may not have the fastest torrenting speeds but you can increase them. Follow these steps:

  • You can use a server from your country or in a neighboring one.
  • Use WireGuard.
  • Torrent is better than WiFi.
  • Change encryption from AES256 to AES-128
  • Split-tunneling is used to route only torrenting traffic.
  • Port forwarding is a way to connect to other peers.
  • Disable uTP from your torrent client
  • Install an older version of the TAP driver by uninstalling it (here’s a helpful guide).
  • Allow the Use Small Packets option.

Does PIA’s SOCKS5 Proxy Encrypt Traffic?

Like any proxy, it cannot secure your data. It will only hide your IP address. You will need to use torrent client’s encryption to get encryption. This is not ideal as it will reduce the number of peers that you can connect to. You can also use the VPN + SOCKS5 method, which is slower and less secure.

We recommend PIA’s VPN. It is extremely fast and offers leak protection and security.

Should you Bind Your Torrent Client To PIA?

This is not necessary because PIA provides a reliable kill switch. To avoid accidental leaks, you can set the kill switch to the Always setting. This will prevent you from being able to connect to a PIA server.
