Speed Tests for Torrenting

We tested PIA using uTorrent, qBittorrent, a 20.00 GB file, WireGuard protocol and four servers (Canada Japan Spain and Romania). Our tester is from Romania. His download speeds and ETAs were originally 28-29 MiB/s with a 15-20 minute ETA (qBittorrent), and 15 MB/s with a 20-minute ETA (20Torrent).

These are the average download speeds

  • Canada – 3-4 MiB/s with a 15-20 minute ETA, (qBittorrent), 2 MB/s with a 2 hours and 30 minutes ETA, (uTorrent), and 3-4 MiB/s

We also tested OpenVPN using the Romanian server. It was faster than qBittorrent, with speeds of 8-9 MiB/s. There was also a 30-minute delay. However, uTorrent speeds were slow at 350 kB/s with an 18-hour ETA.

We also tested the SOCKS5 proxy speed. They were faster than we expected, since there is no encryption. However, they were comparable to the Spanish server speeds: 2 MiB/s with a 2-hour ETA for qBittorrent and 3 MB/s with a 2-hour time ETA for uTorrent. The SOCKS5 proxy was also problematic. Our torrents stopped multiple times. Support reps at PIA said that this can sometimes happen. It is easy to fix this by simply changing the ports and reconnecting to the proxy.

Reddit is a great place to get (some) impartial opinions on VPNs. To find out what other people think about PIA, we checked r/VPNTorrents as well as subreddits.

Redditors generally like PIA for torrenting VPN. It’s simple to use, has high speeds (sometimes) and offers great security.

Some Redditors aren’t happy that Kape Technologies, the company that owns CyberGhost VPN or Zenmate VPN, bought PIA’s parent. However, this doesn’t mean that PIA is less secure. They operate independently and remain a 100% no-logs VPN.

They also used Deluge’s SOCKS5 proxy. If you use proxy settings, Deluge may leak IPs that are not being proxied. We don’t know if this is still happening at the moment. The SOCKS5 proxy does not have a kill switch so it is more likely to leak data (unless the torrent client is bind to the VPN).

They likely experienced DNS, traffic, and/or IPv6 leaks. It’s no surprise that they received DMCA notices.

Log in to your account dashboard. Go to Downloads. Click Regenerate under VPN Settings.

Next, open QBittorrent and then go to Tools > Options > Connect. Choose SOCKS5 in the Type dropdown menu under Proxy Server.

You Can Use PIA’s SockS5 Proxy and VPN simultaneously?

Yes. To do this, go to the Proxy section within the app and enable SOCKS5 proxy. Go to Connection to switch from WireGuard or OpenVPN if it is greyed out. This connection method works only over OpenVPN. For the server’s IP, you’ll have to use the ping command with nl-proxy.privateinternetaccess.com to find it. To generate your username or password, set the port to 1080.

The SOCKS5 + VPN connection method provides more privacy as your IP is hidden behind 2 PIA IP addresses. You can also use a proxy to get encryption. But, it may slow down your download speeds.

Speed up Private Internet Access’ slow Torrenting with

PIA may not have the fastest torrenting speeds but you can increase them. Follow these steps:

  • You can use a server from your country or in a neighboring one.
  • Use WireGuard.
  • Torrent is better than WiFi.
  • Change encryption from AES256 to AES-128
  • Split-tunneling is used to route only torrenting traffic.
  • Port forwarding is a way to connect to other peers.
  • Disable uTP from your torrent client

Does PIA’s SOCKS5 Proxy Encrypt Traffic?

Like any proxy, it cannot secure your data. It will only hide your IP address. You will need to use torrent client’s encryption to get encryption. This is not ideal as it will reduce the number of peers that you can connect to. You can also use the VPN + SOCKS5 method, which is slower and less secure.
